Production
In production, a mobile computer replaces paper and the operator's memory: every batch, every part and every operation is confirmed by scanning. The result is traceability: you know which batch a product was made from, who processed it and when.
Typical tasks
- Tracking batches and raw materials from receiving to the finished product
- Supplying production lines and confirming consumption
- Quality control: recording deviations and inspection results
- Inventory of semi-finished goods and spare parts
- Reading codes applied directly to parts (DPM) where special scan engines are needed
- Maintenance and equipment records: scanning the code on a machine and opening its record
What matters on the factory floor
Durability. Dust, vibration, drops onto concrete, sometimes oil or water. Choose models with IP65 or IP67 protection and a concrete drop specification, not just a "rugged housing".
Scanning. For small, worn or metal-marked codes you need scan engines with high performance on difficult codes. Check the model's data against the type of code you have.
Industrial tablets. At the workstation or on the line, a larger screen is useful: Zebra ET40/ET45 and ET60/ET65, Honeywell RT10A, 10-inch tablets, with variants that have an integrated scanner. The Zebra ET60 can be used both as a tablet and as a vehicle-mounted computer.
Gloves and moisture. If the operator works with gloves, the touchscreen must support that mode, and a physical keypad is sometimes preferable.
Applications. Many factories have legacy software written for terminals with a keypad. Modern Android terminals support terminal emulation, so the old application can be kept: see moving from Windows CE/Mobile to Android.
